Portrait of YoYo, a Tzedek DC financial counseling clientA Tzedek DC Story · ImpactFool (IF) Fund

The American Dream no longer feels distant.

A few months out of college and anxious about money, YoYo found the structure that turned her first paychecks into real progress.

YoYo was just a few months out of college when she attended an informational session on credit hosted by Tzedek DC. The child of Ethiopian immigrants, YoYo was navigating the start of student loan repayment and trying to ease her growing anxiety about money.

After landing her first full-time job, YoYo turned to Tzedek DC's free one-on-one financial counseling for guidance. Her counselor, Melissa, taught YoYo how to budget each paycheck, hold monthly "money meetings" with herself, and use a simple spreadsheet to track her expenses.

That structure changed everything. With new confidence and clarity, YoYo began saving with purpose. Today, she is steadily paying down her student loan and moving closer to home ownership.

And her progress didn't stop with her. She is paying it forward. YoYo has helped a coworker open a high-yield savings account and worked with her mother to set up new systems that make managing money less stressful too.

I once thought home ownership was out of reach at this stage of my life. But because of Tzedek DC, the American Dream no longer feels distant.
