A Tzedek DC Story · ImpactFool (IF) FundSued for a car she never bought, and never could drive.
A senior on a fixed income, fighting a $21,000 debt from a car bought in her name by someone who stole her identity.
Ginny contacted Tzedek DC after being sued to enforce a vehicle financing agreement, with the lender claiming she owed over $21,000 for buying a used car. As a senior citizen with an annual income of around $19,000 from Social Security benefits and a disability pension, she would never be able to pay this alleged obligation.
More importantly, as a disabled person, she could not drive. Ginny had not entered into the agreement and only learned about the car when she was sued.
Ginny believed that someone who knew her had fraudulently purchased the car with her identity. But when she attempted to explain this to the bank without legal representation, they refused to drop the case, despite a clear defense.
Over the next 18 months, Tzedek DC's staff attorneys battled the bank and auto dealership to hold them accountable for enabling a fraudulent transaction with her stolen identity. Ultimately the full $21,000 was removed from her obligations, and all negative reporting lines from the account were removed from her credit report.
In addition to the successful legal resolution, her Tzedek DC attorney helped Ginny digitize her key personal documents and take other steps to prevent future identity theft, something her limited mobility and income had not previously afforded her.
At the end of her case, Ginny expressed deep gratitude for having a Tzedek DC attorney on her side through this stressful ordeal.
